Offsides Explained!!

Tag

Use cones to make a good size rectangle.

Split your team into multiple teams of two
(may need one group of three if you have an odd number of players)

Position your players inside the rectangle. Make sure everyone has a ball because everyone has to dribble.

For each team, assign one player to chase, one player to run.
(again, both players must dribble)

On your command the chaser tries to Tag the runner. Once tagged the runner quickly sits on his/her ball, pops up and now becomes the chaser. This goes back and forth in whatever timeframe you set.

Notes:
- Good for all ages!!
- Players dribbling outside the rectangle automatically becomes the chaser
- Players have to control their ball, they can't leave their ball to tag

Positions & Roles

Coaches, let's get on the same page. Particularly for younger players and/or those moving to travel. Below is a short list of positional names. Consistency (from coach to coach) and simplicity. Don't assume your players know the names and roles for each position.

Offense and d
efense are not positions. When you have the ball your team is on offense. When you don't your team is on defense. Too many players ask to play defense thinking it's rest time. Substitutions are for resting.

Make sure your players understand each position and its role.

Goalie or Goalkeeper (obvious enough) - one who defends your teams goal

Fullback - plays closest to your goal. Primary job to stop opponents from scoring. Also responsible for moving the ball forward and keeping the ball on the opponents side of the field.

Midfielder - positioned between fullbacks and forwards. Primary job to link fullbacks to forwards through ball control and passing. Midfielders both attack and a defend

Forward – positioned in front of the rest of the team. Primary responsibility is to score goals.

Gates

Make small goals by randomly placing many pairs of cones (~1 yard apart) in a large space. Have players dribble their balls through these goals for a point (NOTE: you may need to make a rule disallowing players from dribbling back and forth through just only one or two goals.). Players should try to accumulate as many points as possible in the timeframe you provide. Have players count up their total points and report them to you. Give them an individual "ataboy" or "atagirl".

Challenges

  • Repeat drill, but, ask players to challenge themselves to improve their score by one
  • You can even give them less time on the repeat drill and see if they beat the first score (only tell them you did this if players beat the first score - confidence builder)

Variations

  1. Make 1/2 the goals one color, the other half another color. Place like colors on one side of the space, second color on the other side. Ask players to alternate goal colors after each score. This increase the fitness of the drill.
  2. Players can only dribble through goals with their right foot, with their left foot etc...
  3. Pair up players in teams of two. Tell the teams that to earn a point they must now complete a pass to each other through the cones. Now try above challenges and variations on the teams of two.

Corner Wars

Set up three or four "home bases" (squares) with cones roughly 2-3 yards wide.

Break up the players into three or four teams and have each team get together in their home base.

Place all the balls in the center of the space between the home bases.

On the coaches command the teams are free to gather as many soccer balls as they can into their home base. Players cannot use hands and there is no pushing each other or sitting/laying on the balls. Teams try to gather as many balls as possible into their home bases. Teams can steal balls from each others’ home bases. Coach calls time and counts up how many balls are in each space to determine a winner.

Coach allows team 1 minute to make up a new team strategy before playing again.
